Explore the 7 giant trolls in De Schorre’s Troll Forest

The De Schorre recreation area in Boom is best known as the home of the Tomorrowland dance festival. But there’s so much more to discover! In addition to pedal boating, fishing and walking, you will also find the unique Troll Forest, where no fewer than 7 giant trolls are hidden.

The trolls are actually a gift from Tomorrowland. In 2019, the festival was held at the recreation area for the 15th time, and to celebrate the anniversary, artist Thomas Dambo was invited to create this amazing project.

Walking through the Troll Forest

At the start of the walk, you will find a map showing the approximate locations of the trolls. You can also download the map here. It makes the search a bit easier, but it’s still an adventure! Some of the trolls are quite well hidden, and the paths aren’t always flat: you will often come across muddy sections. The ground here is clay, which was once excavated for the local brick industry.

Here are the seven trolls you can discover along the way:

  • Una & Jeuris: As soon as you start your walk, you will soon come across Una and Jeuris. These two good friends are lying back in an open field, gazing up at the clouds above them. Maybe they are trying to spot shapes in the sky, or simply sharing their thoughts on friendship and the world around them.
  • Kamiel: Kamiel guards the Magical Lookout Tower and wears a mask that allows him to speak the language of animals, both in this world and beyond. This was actually our favorite spot. There is plenty to do for kids, and it’s a great place to stop for a picnic. Did you know that from the top of the tower, you can see the Brussels skyline, including the Atomium?
  • Arvid: Arvid is taking a break on the boardwalk while crafting a large wooden spear. She is hardworking and loves searching for old, dead trees to turn them into something beautiful. She proudly wears a nose ring, an heirloom that has been passed down through her family for generations.
  • Mikil: As you walk along the wooden boardwalk, you will spot the third troll, Mikil, near the lake in the distance. He is busy scooping up water with a small bucket. A sturdy troll who seems to enjoy his task by the water.
  • Hannes: This bearded troll is sitting on a crumbling wall, threading large beads onto a necklace. His special skill is crafting beads from clay, something he does with great pride. He loves showing off his creations to anyone who passes by.
  • Little Nora: The smallest and youngest of the group, hiding in a playful spot. Nora collects magical stones for good luck!

At the Magical Lookout Tower, we even discovered a fun fairytale about these trolls, so be sure not to skip this spot!

Kid-friendly extras: a playground and a cozy brasserie

After the troll adventure, kids can burn off some extra energy at the fun playground in De Schorre. Meanwhile, parents can relax at the nearby brasserie with a drink and a bite to eat. A perfect way to end an adventurous day!

Practical tips for your adventure in the Troll Forest of De Schorre

  • Location: De Schorre, Boom, Belgium
  • Opening hours: Open all year round and free to visit. Check the website of Recreatiedomein De Schorre to make sure there are no events taking place.
  • Parking: Free parking is available at the main entrance. From there, you can easily reach the starting point via stairs or an elevator. The recreation area is spacious and well signposted.
  • What to bring: Dress accordingly and wear suitable shoes. After rainy weather, rubber boots are recommended, as some paths can get muddy and harder to walk. Also, don’t forget to bring water and some snacks for the road.
  • Who it’s for: The walk includes elevation changes, boardwalks and stairs. For young children, a baby carrier is more practical than a stroller, as some of the paths are narrow and uneven. We brought a stroller ourselves, but in hindsight, that wasn’t the best idea. At the congress center and information building De Pitte, you’ll find public restrooms, including a baby changing station and an accessible toilet.
