Although Tirana only opened up to tourism in the 1990s, it’s quickly becoming a hotspot for travelers looking to discover something new in Europe. You’ll find colorful bazaars, historic sites and lively squares – all within walking distance. The city is perfect for a quick 24-hour visit, or do what we did and stay for 48 hours to settle in before kicking off your unforgettable road trip through Albania.

Skanderbeg Square: the vibrant center of Tirana, Albania
Skanderbeg Square is a lively spot where many of Tirana’s main sights come together. Here you’ll find the iconic statue of Skanderbeg, Albania’s national hero, as well as the cheerful “I Love Tirana” sign, the Clock Tower and the Et’hem Bey Mosque.
This square is not only an important historical site, it is also a fun spot for families with young kids. While parents take in the surroundings, little ones can enjoy the carousel or the Ferris wheel. There is even a splash area where you can cool off on warm days.
Skanderbeg Square is the perfect place to relax and soak up the local vibe. Plus, many of Tirana’s other highlights are just a short walk from here.
New Bazaar: colorful and full of life
The New Bazaar, or Pazari i Ri as the locals call it, is one of the most vibrant spots in Tirana. This colorful market has a bit of everything – from fresh produce and flowers to souvenirs and small handmade gifts. It is the perfect place to get a feel for local life, and who knows, you might just find the perfect souvenir to take home.
Around the market, you’ll find cozy restaurants and cafés where you can take a break and enjoy a drink in the sun, with the perfect view of the bazaar. Be sure to try Zgara AlPazar, a great spot for delicious Albanian dishes. It is a must for anyone wanting to discover the authentic flavors of Albania.
The Pyramid of Tirana: a true hotspot in Albania
The Pyramid of Tirana is one of the city’s most striking landmarks and an absolute must-see. This iconic building originally opened in 1988 as a museum dedicated to communist leader Enver Hoxha. Since then, it has served many purposes, including a radio station and even a nightclub. In 2023, it was transformed into a vibrant cultural center by a Dutch architecture firm.
The steps on the outside invite you to climb to the top, where you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful view over Tirana. Especially in the evening, this spot comes alive with friendly crowds, music and atmospheric lighting. Don’t forget to explore the colorful interior of the pyramid, it is definitely worth a visit!
The Cloud (Reja): a modern art installation in Tirana
In the heart of Tirana, you’ll find the striking art installation known as The Cloud, designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. This unique structure, made of white steel rods, appears to float in the air and creates a playful atmosphere for visitors of all ages.
The pavilion has two entrances and is made up of a series of terraces with steps that double as seating for visitors. Both kids and adults are welcome to climb to the top of the structure and relax under the open sky of the city. Especially on warm summer evenings, this place really comes to life with music and theater. The Cloud is a perfect quick stop in Tirana, offering a cozy and photogenic setting.
Delicious ice cream at Laguna Pizza & Ice Cream
Between the Pyramid and Parku Rinia, you will find Laguna Pizza & Ice Cream, a perfect stop for a refreshing break. This popular spot is especially known for its delicious ice cream. Whether you are in the mood for a classic flavor or something more unique, this is the place to be. Enjoy a creamy scoop while taking a moment to relax after exploring Tirana.
Bunk’Art 2: impressive and full of history
Bunk’Art 2 is one of the most remarkable museums in Tirana, offering a unique look into Albania’s dark communist past. Located in the city center, close to Skanderbeg Square, this underground museum is housed in a former bunker and has a distinctly Eastern European vibe.
The entrance to Bunk’Art 2 is an experience in itself. You descend through a long, striking hallway that immediately sets the tone. Once inside, the museum takes you through the experiences and hardships faced by the Albanian people under Enver Hoxha’s regime.
Bunk’Art 2 is surprisingly educational and offers a unique experience for both young people and adults. It is a must-see for anyone who wants to learn more about Albania’s complex history.
The entrance fee is 500 LEK (around €5) per person. For a small extra charge, you can download an audio guide. The museum is open daily from 9.30 AM to 8.00 PM, and you will need about one to two hours to explore everything properly.
Tirana Castle: where history meets modern vibes
Tirana Castle, also known as the Fortress of Justinian, is not the classic castle with towers and turrets you might expect. What you’ll find here are the remains of the old fortress walls – but that doesn’t make it any less interesting. Today, this area is a pedestrian-friendly zone filled with trendy shops, cozy bars and modern restaurants, all creating a relaxed and inviting vibe. It’s a great place to wander around, grab a bite and enjoy the charming mix of old and new.
Explore Blloku: the trendiest neighborhood in Tirana, Albania
Blloku is a neighborhood full of contrasts, where history and modern city life meet on every corner. Once closed to the public during the communist regime, it is now a hotspot where both locals and visitors come together to enjoy trendy bars, colorful street art and a laid-back vibe. The mix of old communist buildings and modern hangouts makes it the perfect place for a unique walk through both past and present.
Families can easily stroll around here, and for young people, it is the place to experience Tirana’s vibrant nightlife.
If you’re looking for a great breakfast spot, Çoko Bistro Bar is a must. The interior is stylish and cozy, and the food is absolutely delicious!
Parku Rinia: a cozy park for all ages
Parku Rinia, which literally means “Park of the Youth,” is one of Tirana’s main city parks and has a rich history. The park dates back to the early communist era and was one of the first projects built using ‘voluntary’ youth labor, which explains its name.
Located in the heart of the city, Parku Rinia is a favorite spot for both locals and visitors. The park not only offers lovely walking paths, but also has a playground that kids will love, making it a great destination for families.
Treat yourself to tasty food at some of Tirana’s trendiest restaurants
Tirana has no shortage of great restaurants with delicious menus. At Zgara AlPazar, you will get the best grilled dishes served in an authentic atmosphere. Looking for something more modern? Head to Millennium Garden, where you can enjoy both local and international dishes in a really cool setting.
Pizza lovers should definitely check out Balbi 35. It is a bit further from the center, but totally worth it. In the trendy Blloku neighborhood, you will find cozy spots like Çoko Bistro, perfect for breakfast or lunch. And do not forget the stylish eateries inside Tirana Castle.
Bonus tip: spending the night in Tirana, Albania
At the beginning of our trip through Albania, we spent two nights in Tirana. We stayed at Vila Ferdinand Modern Rooms in the trendy Blloku neighborhood, just a three-minute walk from the Pyramid of Tirana. The location was perfect, and the rooms were spacious and nicely decorated.
Just keep in mind that parking in the city can be a bit tricky.
At the end of our trip, we stayed at MK Hotel Tirana, a luxurious five-star hotel near the airport. We enjoyed a large swimming pool and beautiful, comfortable rooms. It was the perfect way to relax on our last day, especially after our back-to-basic nights at Lumi i Shalës. And the best part? A five-star hotel like this is surprisingly affordable in Albania.
